How can my student get help with resumes/job or internship searching/choosing a major or a career/interviewing/etc?
Students can utilize the services offered by UCS by visiting the office during drop-in hours (10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday) or by calling or stopping by to make an appointment. Drop-in appointments are for quick questions and generally last no more than 15 minutes. Scheduled appointments can be made for one hour or more, depending on the student's needs. All of the advisors can assist the student in various areas of career and major preparation. UCS advisors may often give "homework assignments" to students before meeting with them again. While UCS will do what we can to assist students in reaching their goals, UCS is not a placement service and does not guarantee a job or internship.
Will you place my son or daughter in a job?
No. We will teach your student about how to get a job and facilitate him/her in making contacts with employers. We are not an employment agency but part of the educational process teaching skills that each student will need any time he/she needs or wants to change jobs.
Is my student guaranteed an Internship?
No. Students can gain experience with jobs that we list, through employers who come to campus for interviews or job fairs or through individual or faculty connections. For-credit internships are usually for juniors or seniors, and they must have faculty approval for credit. We list such opportunities, but it is each student's responsibility to find a faculty member in his/her major department to approve and supervise the experience.
Do you recommend that first-year students work?
YES! Studies consistently show that students who work do better academically and in other areas of school than students who do not work. However, studies also show that first-year students should not exceed 30 hours of combined classes and work. Therefore, for first semester students taking 15 hours, we recommend 10 hours of work per week, but no more than 15 until they see how they manage their time and how much time school really takes.
When should my student come to UCS?
After he/she gets settled in and has the first round of tests. That will probably make it late September or so of his/her first year.
My son or daughter is so busy with school and leadership positions, he/she doesn't have time during his/her senior year to look for a job. It is okay if he/she waits until after graduation to begin the job search, isn't it?
As a senior, your student will have to decide what takes priority. However, studies have indicated that it takes an average of about 7 months to find that career-starting, entry-level job if the search is started while still in school and about 13 months if he/she waits until after graduation. Also, it makes a big difference in the job search if your student has work experience related to his/her career while in school.
Does UCS serve all majors?
Yes, all undergraduate majors. The College of Education does have their own career services for teachers, but we help with resumes and interview preparation for those students. However, it is important to note that employers in different fields seek new hires in different ways. For instance, employers in the Fine Arts, RTVF or Journalism usually do not come to campus to interview. They have enough people pounding on their door that they do not have to be pro-active in recruiting. We try to prepare students to pursue careers in their chosen fields with the best techniques for that field, and if their field is more project based than consistent, such as performance, we work with them on ways to pay the rent while trying to get established.
Is it true that UCS is only for business majors?
No! We help all students in deciding on career paths and majors, plus training in job search techniques. It sometimes appears that we only help business majors because many of the employers who participate in on-campus interviews and job fairs are looking for employees to perform business type functions. However, about 50% of employers attending UCS events are seeking all majors.
