For PhD Students and Alumni:
University Career Services at Texas Christian University no longer houses Dossier/Teaching Portfolio files but instead offers a more user- friendly and up-to-date way of managing your file.
Students/Alums are encouraged to use one of the following methods to manage files:
1) Student/Alumni Self-Managed Dossier/Teaching Portfolio Files:
Students and alumni can update copies of their résumé/vita, writing samples, and recommendation letters, and distribute their files themselves. This means the files will always contain up-to-date information. Students/alumni can also provide a stamped and addressed envelope to references to allow them to send letters directly to a prospective employer or have faculty provide a letter to you which can be photocopied and distributed. University Career Services will provide students/alumni with individual guidance pertaining to setting up self-managed services and how to manage the application process for the faculty job search.
**Or a better time-efficient and cost-effective service**
2) On-Line Dossier/Teaching Portfolio Service through Interfolio:
Interfolio is an on-line dossier/credential file service support by The Chronicle of Higher Education that allows students and alumni to store, manage, and distribute their academic and professional credentials. Interfolio will allow individuals to manage academic vitas, letters of recommendation, transcripts, writing samples, pictures, graphics, and other documents. Features, which are offered to students/alumni, include:
- Documents can be submitted electronically or on paper to be scanned in by the company. Technology helps eliminate human error involved in the paper-based handling of credentials.
- Students/alumni have the ability to add, send, delete, and mail their documents. They can choose which piece of material will go to which employer. Students give Interfolio the authority to send files to each employer.
- Students/alumni have access to Dossier/Teaching Portfolio files 24 hours/7 days a week through the Internet. Mailing requests can be made within a matter of minutes, and Interfolio guarantees all deliveries to be sent within one business day. Electronic document uploads take place instantaneously.
- Applicants using this system can really show their stuff! Graphic designers, photographers, art majors, anyone involved in the visual arts can upload their portfolio. Architects, engineers, and consultants can upload recent projects to demonstrate their mastery of the field. Teacher candidates can include certificates, lesson plans, teacher evaluations, and more. Interfolio offers 5 mg of space for each file holder, which is over 100 pages of documents. Additional space can be purchased for larger files.
- By using this service, the reference writers eliminate the hassle of writing numerous references per candidate. The reference writer only has to write and send one letter per student/alumni. Letters can be open or confidential. Confidential letters can never be viewed by the Dossier/Teaching Portfolio file holder.
Membership through Interfolio will cost Dossier/Teaching Portfolio file holders $15.00 for a one-year plan, $45 for five years, or $75 for ten years. The five- and ten-year plans also offer three first-class mailings for free. The service allows students/alumni to make full Dossier/Teaching Portfolio files available to potential employers by the web for free. If the student wants a file sent to an employer by mail it will cost an additional $5.00 per employer. Additional cost for USPS Priority Mail and Federal Express use is available to the Dossier/Teaching Portfolio file user.
To create an account, simply visit Interfolio. At www.interfolio.com you will be able to find more information about the service. You can also download the Dossier Flyer to learn more about UCS dossier services.
Students and alumni should decide between a self-managed system and using Interfolio. University Career Services also encourages students to participate in another job search method:
3) FrogJobs.net
FrogJobs.net enables employers and professionals to connect through an automated recruiting website. UCS can link students and alumni to employers. This program allows employers to post jobs as well as view and pull student résumés. Students can review job listings, submit résumés, and sign up for on-campus interviews through FrogJobs.net. Students can submit résumés for a variety of jobs in all disciplines, not jut education fields. Come by or call University Career Services, Student Center Annex, 817/257-7860 to learn more about this service.
Last, the role of University Career Services is to provide students, alumni, faculty, and staff with:
- Vita writing and dossier file advice, available by making an appointment with a University Career Services advisor.
- Access to additional print and online resources housed in the University Career Services office in the Student Center Annex.
TCU Dossier/Teaching Portfolio Recommendation Writers:
For many years career service offices all over the country have helped students and alumni maintain paper credential files which were limited in content and involved a great deal of mailing, delay, and general hassle for all concerned. National trends suggest that this type of service is being phased out by career centers nationally because there are better job search methods for students/alumni. University Career Services (UCS) at Texas Christian University (TCU) no longer offers paper Dossier/Teaching Portfolio files to students and/or alumni effective May 1, 2004. This system will be replaced by offering students and/or alumni more contemporary methods of managing their job search.
Students/alumni will be asked to either self-manage their files or put their files on-line. UCS is introducing the Interfolio Service supported by the Chronicle of Higher Education, the premiere clearinghouse for all types of Dossier/Teaching Portfolio information on the Internet. By creating a unique website with a single goal, Interfolio, has been able to dramatically increase the efficiency with which employers receive important reference information from students and alumni.
Interfolio can contain:
- Transcripts
- Vitas
- Letters of Recommendation (confidential and open)
- Examples of work/writing samples
- Dissertation abstracts
- Anything else to complete your job search
Applicants also have control of their files 24 hours 7 days a week. With their electronic files stored on-line, students/alumni are able to give employers instant FREE access to their vital information.
In addition to offering Interfolio to students, alumni and reference writers, UCS will be offering workshops with The William H. Koehler Center for Teaching Excellence at TCU in vita development and Dossier/Teaching Portfolio file management for PhD students and reference letter writing for faculty.
If you should have any questions regarding this reference service for students, alumni, and faculty, please do not hesitate to contact University Career Services at 817/257-7860 or e-mail Ann Reynolds at a.reynolds@tcu.edu. |
